Kenya’s Last Wild Refuge for the Roan Antelope
Ruma National Park sits in the Lambwe Valley near Lake Victoria in western Kenya, a quiet and little-visited reserve that shelters one of the country’s rarest antelope species. Its remote location has helped preserve a wilderness largely untouched by mass tourism.
Ruma is Kenya’s only sanctuary for the roan antelope, alongside populations of Rothschild’s giraffe, oribi, buffaloes and, more recently, reintroduced black and white rhino. The park’s rolling grasslands, backed by the Kanyamwa Escarpment, also support impressive birdlife, including several rare species found nowhere else in Kenya.
For travellers seeking a genuine off-the-beaten-path safari, Ruma offers uncrowded game drives and a sense of discovery increasingly rare in East Africa. Its proximity to Lake Victoria also makes it easy to combine with visits to the lake’s shoreline communities and birdlife.
