Lake Bunyonyi lies in the far southwest of Uganda, near the town of Kabale, its name meaning ‘place of many little birds’ in the local language. Ringed by steeply terraced hills and dotted with 29 islands, it is widely considered one of Africa’s most beautiful lakes.

Free of bilharzia and crocodiles, Bunyonyi is one of the few East African lakes safe for swimming, and its calm waters are ideal for canoeing between the scattered islands, some with their own local legends and histories.
